A new £14 million contract will deliver hundreds of precision attack weapons to the RAF.

Brimstone missiles are carried by RAF Tornado aircraft in Afghanistanand were also used on operations over Libya. Defence Equipment Minister Philip Dunne agreed the contract and has just returned from a visit to Helmand where he met RAF personnel who use the weapon.

This contract with MBDA will increase UK stocks by replenishing weapons used so effectively in Afghanistan and Libya.

Manufactured and assembled at MBDA facilities in Henlow, Bedfordshire, and Lostock, Bolton, the Dual Mode Seeker Brimstone missile is used by RAF crews to engage moving or static targets during the day or at night with pinpoint accuracy. The weapon’s precision guidance capability means that the pilot is able to engage fleeting targets with extreme accuracy.

It is with great sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm that Sapper Richard Reginald Walker from 28 Engineer Regiment, attached to 21 Engineer Regiment as part of the Task Force Helmand Engineer Group, was killed in Afghanistan on Monday 7 January 2013.

Sapper Walker was shot in an apparent ‘insider attack’ by a member of the Afghan National Army (ANA) at Patrol Base Hazrat in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province on Monday 7 January 2013. He was working on a construction task with other military engineers from his Troop, as part of the preparations to hand the camp over to Afghan security forces, when the Afghan soldier turned his weapon on ANA and ISAF soldiers at the base. The incident resulted in a number of casualties, all of whom were extracted to the Bastion Role 3 medical facility where Sapper Walker was pronounced dead.

British forces serving in southern Afghanistan have been marking Christmas at military bases across Helmand Province (25 December).

The festivities took place as the troops completed a full day of operational duties. Many soldiers from the UK-led Task Force Helmand spent the day on patrol in support of the Afghan security forces, yet still most found time to open presents and ring home – and enjoy a freshly-prepared Christmas lunch with all the trimmings.

A Royal Navy helicopter battled against the clock in wintry conditions to lift three climbers to safety from Buachaille Etive Mor in Glencoe.
The three walkers, despite being experienced and well-equipped, had taken a wrong turn on their route and become lost.

Their distress call went into Fort William Police at 1703hrs on Sunday 2 December and the four-strong crew from HMS Gannet in Prestwick, the UK’s busiest Search and Rescue unit, was alerted at 1716hrs. The crew of the latest of the Royal Navy’s most advanced warships, HMS Dragon, have been rehearsing how to help in a civilian emergency.

The latest of the Royal Navy’s Type 45 destroyers is in the South West of England training to become fully operational and ready to be deployed.
The ship, which has some of the world’s most sophisticated and accurate weapon, sensor and electronic warfare technology on board, is training under the Plymouth-based Flag Officer Sea Training organisation. For several weeks the ship is rehearsing wide-ranging skills from fighting wars at sea to providing humanitarian aid.
Humanitarian aid, involving going to the aid of civilian authorities, can include sending a warship to the scene of natural disasters (such as a volcanic eruption) or a man-made event like a war where civilians need evacuating; recent examples being when the Royal Navy helped evacuate residents from Libya and Lebanon.
